Field Trip!
Yesterday we took a field trip to the Granite Museum in Elberton, GA. It is the "Granite Capitol of the World". One-third of all monumental granite comes from this small town.
This is a granite statue of the state of Georgia. The kids are pointing to the town of Elberton.
This is a carved granite statue of a lion with a fish tail.
Emily with the controversial statue of "Dutchy". This statue was pulled down and burried face down because it was a yankee soldier. He was later exhumed an lies in the museum. I think that's a good compromise, not shamefully burried nor displayed in the town square. Notice Lily's finger is in his ear. I hope she's not making political protests at the age of four.
They gave the kids free samples of granite as a souvineir. Emily took this picture.

We were big rivals with Elbert Co. in High School. I always said they were dumb as a rock :)
We're big rivals with Hart Co. They're dumb as dogs.
What a neat field trip. Did you call ahead? When we visit my Mom I would like to do this with Sienn. Did you get to see the granite cutting equipment and the mining being done? Thanks for sharining: ) Poor Dutchy, if no one likes him, they should send him back home to the north. Do you know who commissioned Dutchy?
Bye for now,
Ash
We only called ahead to get the hours for the museum and directions. I would have loved to have gone to an actual quarry to see the equipment at work, but an air conditioned museum sounded better with all the little ones. If I were you, I would go to a quarry, too since you only have two kids and will probably have grandma with you.
Thanks Deeann, I will look into it, and I will leave the little one at home with the Grandma! Such a luxury.
The museum looks really cool too. Bye
Ash
lived this close to that museum for 7 years now, and never knew it existed!
